Master Isaac

Master Isaac (Ignacio Chevez Jr.) has been practicing Taekwondo since 2005. He is currently a 5th degree black belt under Kukkiwon (The Taekwondo headquarters in South Korea), and a licensed 3rd class international Master under Kukkiwon. Master Isaac is one of few Americans who had the unique opportunity to attend a semester at a university in South Korea called Keimyung University, where he trained with the school's three Taekwondo teams: Sparring, Poomsae (forms), and Demonstration.

Master Isaac's major is sparring. He has experience in Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Karate, Muay Thai, and Jiu-jitsu tournaments. His goal for teaching martial arts is to teach discipline, good values, and a system for self-defense that is effective to use for both sport and practical use. Check out some of his tournament highlights below!

Why Practice Martial Arts?

Martial arts have been practiced all over the world for thousands of years. Below are some highlighted reasons and benefits that you are your child may find in practicing martial arts here at Legion.

Self-Defense

Let's face it: we live in a dangerous world. No matter where you live or how many locks you have on your door... danger exists. Practicing martial arts will help prepare you for the case, slim or not, of needing to protect yourself. Learn to punch and kick correctly, learn to be aggressive when needed, and learn to de-escalate a situation using martial arts. Be ready for all of life's challenges!

Focus

In a world filled with stimulation and multi-tasking, it is becoming more and more important to find an activity in your life that will teach you the one skill we need to stay on a path: Focus. While practicing martial arts, we learn to concentrate our focus on our breath and movements. With complete focus, we can learn to temporarily forget all other stressors in the world, while only focusing on the MOST IMPORTANT thing we most commonly forget: the present moment. Develop the skill of focusing while practicing martial arts to develop a mind which can pierce through stone.

Confidence

There is a story of an observer on an African Safari. Nearly every animal this observer sees is on edge... they flee at the sound of anything, constantly on the run. Its evident that their hearts are beating very fast, ready to escape at the smallest possibility of danger. There is one animal, however, that stands out from the rest. The African Lion lies peacefully on the open ground, opening its eyes to view the van passing by before yawning and going back to sleep.

The lion is confident. He knows he is strong, despite the overwhelming size of the van that passes him. When you are confident, when you believe in yourself, when you KNOW you are trained and ready for anything: a feeling of peace and relaxation starts to build itself in your daily life. Anxiety drops, and your heart beats a little slower in otherwise overwhelming situation. By training in martial arts, we prepare ourselves for battles by adapting a sense of confidence that can help us to feel more like the lion, and less like a fleeing gazelle.

Respect

Respect on the surface is treating others the way you want to be treated. Martial arts teaches this at a much deeper level.

Firstly, respect must be something we must develop towards ourselves. We must treat ourselves to a high standard. This includes keeping our mind and body clean, surrounding ourselves with people that want the best for us, and developing discipline that will help us to achieve our goals. We don't cheat, we don't look for shortcuts, and we never commit any action that might negatively impact our mind or body.

Secondly, we must use this respect we develop for ourselves and project it onto the world around us. Now that we know how to treat ourselves, we must also follow the same standard to treat others. At Legion Martial Arts, we teach to respect everyone. We do not teach "respect must be earned." When we meet someone for the first time, we teach to genuinely care for their interests and their goals. We teach to hold them to a high standard. Once we find the balance of respecting ourselves AND respecting those around us, we create a community that supports each other. We create a legion of warriors that build each other up to achieve our goals. Martial Arts teaches respect as our ONLY form of communication.

Sense of Community

I, Master Isaac, was homeschooled through elementary school. My father signed me up for martial arts classes when I was three years old for self-defense purposes, and through that I found my martial arts family that has stuck with me my entire life. I have friends from all over the world, and my team of people that I have met and trained with here in the U.S. No matter your age, background, gender... training in martial arts can help you to find people with similar goals that can support each other and serve as lifelong friends.
