What Is the Best Age for Kids to Start Martial Arts?

Parents

One of the most common questions we hear from parents in Gambrills, Crofton and Odenton is, "Is my child old enough?" The good news: most kids can start much earlier than parents expect.

Starting at ages 3 to 5

At Legion Martial Arts, our Tiny Tigers program welcomes children ages 3 to 5. Classes are short, playful and built around games, so young kids learn to listen, follow directions, balance and coordinate their bodies without feeling pressured.

Parents often tell us very few places offer structured classes for this age, and that their preschoolers pick up pre-K skills like counting, colors and taking turns right alongside their kicks.

Ages 6 and up

Once kids turn 6, they move into our Juniors Taekwondo program. Here the focus shifts to belt progress, technique, goal-setting and teamwork, while keeping the energy high and the lessons fun.

Signs your child is ready

If your child can stay with a group activity for 20 to 30 minutes and enjoys moving, they are ready. Shy kids are welcome too; confidence is something we build together.

The easiest way to find out is to try. New students can take 2 classes for $20 at our dojo on MD-3 in Gambrills.
